Contact UsWhat Is Rosacea?
Rosacea, a condition that causes the skin to look inflamed and red, is usually presented across the nose and cheeks. It can frequently be mistaken for other skin ailments but can be treated and handled if diagnosed correctly. At Desert Sage Dermatology, we understand that rosacea is more than just facial redness—it can impact your confidence and quality of life. As a board-certified nurse practitioner specializing in dermatology, Megan Ahmed, NP-C provides personalized, evidence-based care designed to reduce flare-ups, improve your skin's appearance, and help you regain confidence. Rosacea can occur to almost anybody, but it is prevalent among middle-aged to elderly women with light skin. This is a skin condition with no actual cure, but it can be managed. If left untreated, it can worsen over the years, causing symptoms to return and flare up for weeks and weeks. Desert Sage Dermatology founder and nurse practitioner Megan Ahmed, NP-C will evaluate your skin for rosacea and create a personalized treatment plan to keep the symptoms at a minimum.
Why do I have Rosacea?
The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but research suggests it develops from a combination of genetic, immune system, and environmental factors. Many people with rosacea have skin that is naturally more sensitive and reactive.
Common factors that can contribute to rosacea include:
- Family history or genetics
- An overactive immune response
- Increased skin inflammation
- Abnormal blood vessel reactivity
- Certain microscopic skin mites (Demodex) that may contribute in some individuals
Although rosacea cannot be cured, many people successfully control their symptoms by avoiding personal triggers and following a customized treatment plan.
Common rosacea triggers include:
- Sun exposure
- Heat and hot weather
- Emotional stress
- Alcohol
- Spicy foods
- Hot beverages
- Vigorous exercise
- Certain skincare products
Learning your unique triggers is an important part of long-term rosacea management. During your visit, we'll help you identify patterns, recommend gentle skincare, and create a treatment plan that keeps your skin calm and healthy year-round.
How do we treat Rosacea?
Every patient experiences rosacea differently, which is why treatment begins with a thorough evaluation of your skin and symptoms. We develop individualized treatment plans that address both the visible signs of rosacea and the underlying inflammation.
Your treatment plan may include:
- Prescription topical medications to reduce redness and inflammatory bumps.
- Oral medications when deeper inflammation or more severe flare-ups are present.
- Medical-grade skincare recommendations to strengthen the skin barrier and reduce sensitivity.
- Trigger identification and lifestyle counseling to help minimize future flare-ups.
- Long-term maintenance plans focused on keeping your skin clear and healthy.
Because rosacea is a chronic condition, ongoing management is often the key to achieving lasting results. Our goal is not only to calm active flare-ups but also to help prevent them before they occur.
Managing Rosacea
Though there is not currently a cure for rosacea, there are plenty of treatment alternatives available, like antibiotics that assist with flare-ups. You can use the medication in a pill form or as a cream, gel, or lotion. Pills tend to be much more effective in providing rapid results but can trigger more side effects. If antibiotics aren't effective, acne medications, such as isotretinoin, have proven to work for many patients. Cosmetic or plastic surgery might be required in circumstances where the symptoms become permanent, such as enlarged blood vessels or inflammation that will not go away with other therapies. Laser procedures or electrocautery can be chosen to reduce the look of blood vessels on the face,
Rosacea Reviews
Ten out of ten across the board. Megan is so detailed and thoughtful! I have rosacea and I'm already seeing a difference in my skin after just changing a few topicals. I never thought my face would stop "burning". We went over so much in our first appt that when I got home I realized I didn't write down what order to put everything on in. Megan called me back and we went over my new AM and PM routine together, product by product. I'm hopeful that some day they'll have a portal or email to send post-appt lingering questions to but honestly I recommend them as-is anyway! Adding: one of my prescriptions was going to be $350 for just a face wash and she routed me to one of her favorite pharmacies that was able to get it for me for $40. What we don't know is that a lot of these prices are pharmacy-driven. Very thankful for her helping me navigate this!
