Actinic keratoses (AKs) are considered precancerous lesions, and present as rough, scaly patches appearing on the skin as a result of sun damage. Some Actinic Keratoses can turn into skin cancer so early detection and treatment is important. Aks are commonly seen on sun-exposed skin of the face, ears, scalp (for those with areas of hair loss), backs of hands and forearms.
What causes Actinic Keratoses?
While anyone is at risk for developing Aks, the frequency increases with age and cumulative lifetime sun exposure. They are also more common in individuals who are immunosuppressed, such as those who have undergone organ transplant(s).
